CRSC vs. CRDP: Which One Do You Get?
Two programs, one goal, very different rules
Both CRSC and CRDP exist to fix the same problem: military retirees with VA disability historically had their retirement pay reduced dollar-for-dollar by their VA compensation (called the 'VA offset'). Both programs restore some or all of that offset.
CRDP (Concurrent Retirement & Disability Pay): Automatic — no application needed. Requires military retirement with 20+ years AND a 50% or higher VA disability rating. You receive both full retirement pay and full VA disability pay concurrently. CRDP is taxable income (as part of retirement pay).
Two programs, one goal, very different rules
CRSC (Combat-Related Special Compensation): Must apply through your branch of service. Available to retirees with combat-related disabilities at any VA rating percentage. The disability must be directly caused by armed conflict, hazardous duty, conditions simulating war, or an instrumentality of war. CRSC is tax-free.
You cannot receive both CRSC and CRDP simultaneously. If eligible for both, the VA pays whichever results in the higher total payment.
Key strategic consideration: CRDP is taxable, CRSC is tax-free. For some retirees, CRSC's tax-free status makes it the better deal even when the dollar amount appears similar. Run both calculations to determine which provides more take-home pay.
