TAP Checklist: Financial Decisions Before You Separate
What your TAP class should have spent more time on
The Transition Assistance Program (TAP) covers a lot of ground in a short time. Here are the financial decisions that deserve more attention than they typically get in the classroom.
Leave sell-back vs. terminal leave is a real financial decision with significant implications. Selling back leave pays you base pay only — no BAH, no BAS, no TRICARE continuation. Taking terminal leave keeps you on active duty status (with full BAH, BAS, and TRICARE) while you start your civilian job. For an E-6 in a high-BAH area, terminal leave can be worth $2,000–$4,000 more per month than sell-back. Always do the math.
Your VA disability claim should be filed before you separate — specifically through the Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) program, which allows you to file 180–90 days before your separation date. BDD claims are processed faster and have higher approval rates than claims filed after separation. Do not leave the service without filing.
What your TAP class should have spent more time on
SCRA protections end when you leave active duty. If you have pre-service debts at the 6% capped rate, they revert to the original interest rate upon separation. Plan for the payment increase. Contact each creditor before separation to understand the timeline.
Separation pay offset is widely misunderstood: if you receive involuntary separation pay, any future VA disability compensation will be withheld until the gross separation pay amount has been recouped. This doesn't mean you shouldn't take separation pay — it means you should understand the timeline and plan your cash flow accordingly. For large separation pay amounts, recoupment can take 2–5 years.
Finally: start SFL-TAP as early as possible. The 180-day window feels long until you're simultaneously filling out BDD paperwork, scheduling VA exams, interviewing for civilian jobs, arranging a PCS move, and trying to keep performing your military duties. Start the financial planning piece at day 180, not day 90.
