VA
VA Disability for Mental Health (Non-PTSD)
Depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorders
Depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorder use the same rating formula as PTSD (38 CFR § 4.130). Ratings: 0–100% based on occupational and social impairment.
VA anti-pyramiding rule: only ONE mental health rating total. PTSD + depression + anxiety = single combined psychiatric rating. The examiner uses whichever diagnostic code best fits your overall condition.
Secondary mental health claims are highly effective: depression secondary to chronic pain (service-connected back/knee injury) is one of the most successful secondary claim types. Consistent treatment records strengthen the claim significantly.
