What GI Bill Benefits Are Left When It Runs Out
Options after 36 months of entitlement
After exhausting 36 months of Post-9/11 GI Bill:
VR&E (Chapter 31): if you have a service-connected disability creating an employment barrier, Vocational Rehabilitation provides additional months of education with no cap. Can cover graduate programs, certifications, and even on-the-job training. This is the most underutilized veteran education benefit.
Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship: up to 9 extra months for STEM degrees or teaching certifications. Must have ≤6 months remaining entitlement to apply.
State benefits: Texas Hazlewood Act (free state school tuition), Illinois Veterans Grant, California CalVet fee waiver, and many others provide education benefits independent of the GI Bill.
Employer tuition assistance: many Fortune 500 companies offer $5,250–$10,000/year in tuition reimbursement.
Stretch strategy: use GI Bill for the most expensive terms. Pay out of pocket (or with Pell Grants) during cheaper summer sessions. This extends your effective coverage beyond 36 months.
