Yellow Ribbon Program Explained
How private school tuition gets covered
The Post-9/11 GI Bill caps tuition coverage at the in-state public school rate. For private schools that charge more, the Yellow Ribbon Program fills the gap.
How it works: the school voluntarily agrees to cover a portion of the tuition gap (say, $10,000/year). The VA matches the school's contribution dollar-for-dollar (another $10,000). If the remaining gap after GI Bill + both Yellow Ribbon contributions is $0, the veteran pays nothing out of pocket.
Limitations: not all schools participate. Participating schools may limit the number of Yellow Ribbon slots and the amount they contribute. Some schools offer unlimited slots with full gap coverage; others offer 5 slots at $2,000/year. Check before enrolling.
Eligibility: you must be at 100% Post-9/11 GI Bill benefit level (36+ months of qualifying service). Active duty members and those using transferred benefits from a 100%-eligible sponsor also qualify.
Pro tip: negotiate with the school. Some schools will increase their Yellow Ribbon contribution for qualified veteran applicants. It costs them nothing extra because the VA matches — so a school increasing from $5,000 to $10,000 unlocks $10,000 more from the VA.
